Attaching the headstall to the upper hook secures the bit in the correct position and prevents it from slipping on the cheekpieces. By attaching the reins to the rein hooks, the rider can lift the cheekpieces and take advantage of the independent lateral movement of the mouthpiece. The hooks do not increase leverage but allow the rider to switch from direct to indirect rein action without having to change the bit. A chin strap (using a Myler chin strap set) provides additional chin strap pressure.
The small hole behind the upper slot is used to attach a chin strap. (Secure with two chin hooks.)

Effect: Direct rein action when no rein hook is used. Indirect rein action when the rein is attached to the rein hook.
