In addition, a paraffin-oil emulsion is incorporated into the ice, which has poor thermal conductivity, thereby preventing cold injury. Heat is drawn away from the body part very slowly, thereby preventing the release of so-called messenger substances such as bradykinin, serotonin, and prostaglandin.
