An older Black Forest pony mix gelding - Hello, this is hard for me, but due to changes in my professional and personal life, I’d like to offer my Ponymix gelding, Montano, for sale. I’ve had him for 13 years and really have nothing but good things to say about him. He’s a thoroughly sweet horse to handle and can be ridden easily by beginners and even children; I’ve taken him to several children’s birthday parties and preschool events where even 2- and 3-year-olds were able to ride him. I’ve ridden him a lot on cross-country trails, where he’s afraid of almost nothing, walks through water, and is always easy to control at any gait. If he ever gets startled, he’s never made more than a small jump. He gets along very well with other horses and has been kept with mares, stallions, or foals without any problems. In a herd, however, he’s always fairly low in the pecking order and can be shooed away by dominant horses. Under saddle, he’s sweet, though he’s always a bit sluggish at first; he can also be a little stubborn, though this has never been dangerous—it’s more a matter of him standing still and needing a gentle nudge to get moving. He’s used to spending the night in a stall during the winter, but he’s also been kept in an open barn—which, given his low status in the herd, wasn’t a long-term solution for me. He’s also familiar with electric fencing. He’s never been seriously ill; he’s been vaccinated regularly and has had regular dental checkups. I could also easily see him as a companion for a horse in rehabilitation or for senior horses. I really hope to find a loving home for him where he can still have a little fun and just be a horse.
